Wood Turning
Our prized shop equipment is the wood turning lathe. With this beaut, we're able to turn amazing vessels, spindles, bowls, drink ware, and other round objects...
We initially got the turning lathe to make wheels for our toys but have expanded and delved deep into the world of turning. This work is truly something we love! It’s especially rewarding when we find our own locally sourced wood and discover something amazing with the wood.
When the power company cut down their big Sycamore tree at TreeGarden they wanted to honor her memory by giving the wood to 44 artists to create with. Our contributions is this large sculpture, called “Spirits From the Grain.” We wanted to create a piece that paid homage to the original log. Terry was inspired by the roots and it spiraled out of control from there. He turned the pieces on the wood lathe using a technique called eccentric turning, in which the pieces are worked off-center. The hardest part was knowing when to stop. We considered several finishes and touches but decided for a simple clear coat to accentuate the woodgrain and brought it all together with the Black Cherry finial.
Watch a few short clips of Terry turning wood on the lathe! Including an off-set or eccentric turned item.
Check out the alien spaceship vessel! Turned on the lathe and made of Mahogany and Poplar.

Chaos Woods loves turning! We're making vessels for storing jewelry, candy and anything else you desire made out of unique woods, many of them locally sourced!
